Flash Cards for Amateur Radio Study
Print files of flash cards for the Technician, General and Extra question pools
can be downloaded from the Ham Education web site. There are four files for each license class - single pass, top, bottom and
combined top/bottom for use with printers that print double-sided. All cards reference the ARRL manual chapter and page as
a convenient detailed reference for the student.
Cards are printed eight to a page. Each card is approximately 3.78 by 2.40 inches. To be useful
they would have to be manually cut. There are borders around each card.
Here are the links to the PDF files,
Suggestions for printing and cutting flash cards
- Printing in one-pass using a one-sided printer
The T1, G1 and E1 PDF files are made to print the cards on only one side
of the paper, four cards per page. The left side is the question and the right side the
answer. Print the file, fold each page in half vertically. You might glue the two halves
together to form a rigid card. Fold the page in half twice and then cut making four
equally sized flash cards. Repeat the process for each page. You can do this a little
at a time as you read the ARRL manual since the questions are printed in order of chapter
and page number occurance.
- Printing in two-passes using a one-sided printer
The T1-Top/Bottom, G1-Top/Bottom and E1-Top/Bottom are for printing on both sides of the paper
on a printer with that only has one-sided printing. First print the -Top file, put the paper
back into the printer upside down and print the -Bottom file. Experiment with just one page to
confirm how the pages are to inserted for the second pass - up/down forward/backwards. It may
be different on different manufacturer's printers. The -Bottom page needs to align so the answer
for a card is printed on the back of the correct question.
This method will print one half the number of pages as using the T1, G1 or E1 files since the
answers are printed on the back of the page, not to the right on top. But the cutting will be a
little more work. Depending of the printer, the registration of the top and bottom cards may
be slightly off but experience shows the difference is usually minor. Carefully cut eight cards
from each sheet. You can do this a little
at a time as you read the ARRL manual since the questions are printed in order of chapter
and page number occurrence.
- Printing in one-pass using a two-sided printer
The T2, G2 and E2 PDF files are made to print the cards in one pass on a
printer that has two sided capability. The PDF files alternate the top and bottom pages
for the same set of eight cards. This method will produce the same result as using the
T1-Top/Bottom, G1-Top/Bottom and E1-Top/Bottom files. Be careful when loading the paper
to make sure it's centered in the feeder so printing on the back is aligned properly with
the top page. Slight mis-alignment is acceptable. Testing a single page is recommended to
make sure registration close enough to produce the cards.
